Question 1

What identification should I bring to my appointment?

Accepted Answer

Please bring a current, acceptable government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, state ID, or passport. Other forms of identification may be accepted when permitted by Virginia law.

Question 2

What if the name on my identification is different from the name on my document?

Accepted Answer

Please let me know before the appointment if the name on your identification differs from the name on your document. The notary must be satisfied that the identification presented establishes the identity of the signer.

Question 3

Does the signer have to be present?

Accepted Answer

Yes. For an in-person notarization, the signer must personally appear before the notary at the time of notarization and provide satisfactory evidence of identity.

Question 4

Can I sign the document before the notary arrives?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the type of notarization. A document requiring an acknowledgment may already be signed. Documents requiring a jurat should be signed in the notary's presence after the required oath or affirmation. If you're unsure, wait to sign until your appointment.

Question 5

Does my document have to be written in English?

Accepted Answer

No. The document itself does not have to be in English. However, the notarial certificate completed by the notary must be in English. The notary must also be able to communicate directly with the signer and understand what notarial act is being requested.

Question 6

What should I have ready before my appointment?

Accepted Answer

Please have your document, acceptable identification, and all required signers ready for the appointment. Do not sign a document requiring a jurat beforehand. If you're unsure whether you should sign in advance, wait until the notary arrives.

Question 7

What if my document does not contain a notarial certificate?

Accepted Answer

If your document does not contain a notarial certificate, please contact the person or organization that provided or will receive the document to determine which notarial act is required. I can provide or attach an appropriate notarial certificate once you or another lawful authority tells me which notarial act is needed, but I cannot choose the notarial act for you.

Question 8

Can you prepare or explain legal documents for me?

Accepted Answer

No. Fiducia Mobile Notary Services does not provide legal advice. I can perform authorized notarial acts, but I cannot advise you about the legal meaning or effect of your document or tell you how to complete it.

Question 9

Can you notarize a document with blank spaces?

Accepted Answer

Documents should be completed before your appointment whenever possible. A notary cannot complete an incomplete notarial certificate. If you're unsure what information belongs in your document, please contact the document's issuing or receiving party before the appointment.

Question 10

Can you tell me which type of notarization I need?

Accepted Answer

If your document does not specify the type of notarization required, I cannot choose the notarial act for you. You may need to contact the person or organization that provided or will receive the document, or consult an attorney.
